Positive Mental Health
At this time of year, life can be stressful with how busy we all are with celebrations and family outings, and also with remembering those who are no longer with us. Remember to take the time to relax and think about the good things going on in your life. Research shows that if you write down 3 good things that happen each day, for 7 days, you will have a more positive outlook on life. Therefore, you will be better able to cope with stress.
You can write down 3 good things that happened to you or that you did each day. We challenge everyone (parents, students, and staff) to do this for this coming week. Use this graphic if you like:

CONCERT
Thank you families for joining us yesterday at the school to see our "Winter in the City" concert. We hope you enjoyed it!
We changed the format a bit this year. We held it earlier in December than we have in the past in the hopes that more families could attend before the busy holiday season started. Also, we held the concert all on one night so that families with several children do not have to attend two evening concerts. We would appreciate any feedback you have for us for future concerts. You can contact Ms. Couch at jcouch@sjsd.net or Ms. Amaral at samaral@sjsd.net

Callie's Backpacks
This winter season we would like to help our
friend Callie help the homeless. Callie
is a friend of ours that used to come to this school. When Callie was in grade
5, she learned of how there are many people living on our streets with nothing
at all, so she created Callie’s
Backpacks.
Callie collects backpacks and many different
items that people need to survive and feel comfortable. Once she has collected
the items, she distributes them to people in need. So far she has handed out
over 200 backpacks, but there is still a need for more.
When you and your family come to the winter
concert, please bring some items that will help fill the backpacks. Here are
some items that would be helpful.
·
Backpack
·
Blankets
·
Warm socks
·
Mitts
·

·

·
Deodorant
|
·
Toothpaste
·
Toothbrush
·

·

·

We will put boxes outside the office for
collection during the week, and at the doors of the gym during the winter
concert.

Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Stevenson Britannia!
What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this
important literary event. Book Fair will be held in conjunction with Student
led conferences on the evening of November 26 and the morning of November 27.
You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with
a wide assortment for all reading levels. There will be games and a door prize
for families who visit. You
could win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s
classroom!

read reviews of the featured books. You can also watch book trailers and author

CONFERENCES
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Student-Led Conferences are on: Thursday, Nov. 26th
4:30-7:00 p.m.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are on: Friday, Nov. 27th 9:00-11:30 a.m.
On November 25, you will be receiving your child(ren)’s
first term report card. Please read over the report card with your child(ren)
and celebrate their hard work and accomplishments at school this fall.
We have made a change from last year due to some feedback
that some parents want to have a private meeting time with their child(ren)’s
teachers. So, we are offering both Student-Led Conferences and Parent-Teacher
Conferences.
For Student-Led
Conferences, we will continue to have an Open House format. Therefore, it
is not necessary to make an appointment. You are welcome to come to the school
when you can during the above mentioned time. This Open House format is
intended to give you the flexibility to bring your child(ren) to the school
when it is convenient for you and have your child(ren) show you their learning.
This is a time to celebrate your child(ren)’s accomplishments and progress in
school and to make connections with the Stevenson staff and other families in
our school.
For Parent-Teacher
Conferences, please call the school to arrange an appointment during the
above mentioned time with your child(ren)’s teachers. This is an opportunity to
speak with teachers without your children present regarding any concerns or any
private matters that are not appropriate to discuss during the Open House
celebration of learning.
If you cannot make it to either of these events, please call
the school. Our teachers would be glad to schedule a time to meet or speak over
the phone with you. We value having good communication with you and we also
love showing you the great things students are doing at school. Our phone number is: 204-832-1359.
We look forward to seeing you and celebrating with you.

Bus Cancellation
Metro superintendents check the weather in the morning and make a determination as to whether or not buses are cancelled for the day in the Metro area. -45 degrees Celsius or colder (with windchill) and or severe snowstorms are a couple of the determining factors. Once a decision is made to cancel school buses, a synrevoice message will then be sent out to parents and principals. The news media is also alerted to cancellations and Division websites are updated to reflect any announcement. Parents of bussed students can then determine whether or not they want to send/drive their children to school.
As usual, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call the school at 204-832-1359.

Winter Clothing
It is now getting colder outside. Please remember that students spend 1 hour total outside when they are at school for recesses. Please help your child(ren) dress for the weather before you send them to school.
Koats for Kids is collecting all sizes of gently used winter jackets (clean with working zippers), snow pants, boots, hat, scarves and mittens. Donations can be dropped off at any Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Station or Perth’s location.
You may also donate gently used, clean winter outerwear directly to the school. Just drop off items at the office. We will put them to good use.

Grade 4 and 5 Student Survey
October, 2015
Dear Parents or Guardians:
Re: Province-Wide Implementation of Tell Them From Me
Grades 4-12 Student Survey on Bullying and School Safety
In our continuing efforts to increase school effectiveness,
Education and Advanced Learning will continue with the implementation of an
online student survey this fall called Tell Them From Me (TTFM). This is
a well-known survey tool that gives students the opportunity to express their
thoughts on various topics and provides schools and school divisions with
information to improve student learning and foster safe and welcoming
environments for all students.
TTFM was created by The Learning Bar and is based on the work
of Dr. Doug Willms, a researcher who is well known nationally and
internationally for his work on the development of educational monitoring
systems. Please refer to The Learning Bar’s website at www.thelearningbar.com
to obtain more information.
TTFM is an online survey that allows students to provide their
input anonymously in terms of school improvement initiatives. Each student
receives a randomly generated username and password, so that their identity and
responses cannot be linked. All students in grades 4 and 5 will be given the
opportunity to participate in the survey, but their participation is not
mandatory.
The survey on bullying and school safety has been specifically
designed for elementary students and will require approximately 30 minutes to
complete. Students will be asked a variety of questions, including the topics
of “bullying and school safety”. The
survey will be administered at Stevenson between October 26, 2015 and October
30, 2015.
If you have any questions, please contact Samantha Amaral
(Vice Principal) or Jane Couch (Principal) at 204-832-1359.
Thank you for your support in this important initiative.
Sincerely,
Samantha Amaral
Vice Principal

Student Vote
Our Grade 4 and 5 students have been learning about the federal election. Thanks to Mr. Trembath, Mrs. Kaczmarz, and Mrs. Beazley for doing such a thorough job of teaching our students about all the parts of an election and about all the political parties' platforms.
Students were able to make personal decisions about which political party they would each vote for. Today, each Grade 4 and 5 student participated in the #studentvote2015. Ballots will be counted and we will see how close these students' votes are to the real federal election on Monday. We are so proud of our students for how seriously they treated this exercise in learning about democracy.
Everyone remember to go vote. It is your right and your responsibility as a Canadian citizen.

types of plastic bags that are ready to be recycled. Groceries bags, shopping
bags, ziplock bags, bread bags, produce bags and more are all accepted. Please

Community Management of Head Lice
Head lice commonly occur in young children and as such, at the beginning of the school year, it is good practice to remind parents about detection and management. The best way to detect and manage head lice is for parents to check their children's heads on a regular basis throughout the year. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has prepared information for parents available here and here. Parents may also contact a public health nurse at 204-940-2040.

VISIT US
We always welcome family members who can come to school during the day, to arrange to visit and volunteer in your child(ren)'s classrooms. Please call the school or email your teacher to make arrangements.
For those of you who cannot visit us during the day, you can stay in touch by visiting our classroom blogs, Twitter and Instagram feeds. These social media platforms are your windows into our classrooms. They are also useful when trying to talk about your child(ren)'s day at school. When you ask them, "How was your day?" or "What did you do at school today?", you usually get the answers: "Fine." or "Nothing." Instead, try visiting the school blogsite with your child(ren). From here, you can see all of our classroom blogs, Twitter and Instagram feeds. When looking at the posts together, you can ask your child much more open-ended questions, like: "Tell me about this.", "Why did you make dots?", "What is everyone doing in this picture?", "How did you make this?". You can get into a much more positive conversation with your child(ren) this way.
Always remember to tell your child(ren) how proud you are of them for going to school and trying their best. Openly talk about how everyone has challenges and everyone has strengths. We work to our students' strengths first, so that when they meet challenges, they will feel more confident and resilient to tackle them. This works for adults too!

WJHA
Today was a special day at Stevenson, where our new Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy Gr. 2/3 students and returning Gr. 4/5 students went to the IcePlex to try on their new hockey equipment! Our students represented our school very well with the WJHA staff.
Each year, we form a staff committee to select students suitable for the program. If you have any questions about the criteria or the process, please call the school. If you feel you would like your child(ren) considered for the program in the future, please let us know.
Hockey will start on Oct. 29. Our time slot is in the morning at the IcePlex. A school bus transports our hockey students to the rink. Families are always welcome to come to the rink to watch. Students go through hockey drills to learn the skills to eventually play games. It is quite a magical process to watch!
The staff at Stevenson believe in providing innovative and creative opportunities for all of our students. So, starting on Oct. 29, the students who are not in the hockey program participate in "Project Thursdays". Every Thursday morning, students do project-based learning where they participate in creative experiences inspired by students and teachers. You might see students participating in drama activities, yoga, singing, dancing, building and playing with manipulatives, or creating their own inventions! The ideas are endless for these days! If you feel you can contribute to teaching something special to our students, please feel free to contact your child's teacher. We greatly value learning from each other and using the strengths of all of us to teach our children.

We had an absolutely wonderful day on Friday! We celebrated each other's cultures, learned a few games, activities, and dances, and enjoyed tasting food from each other's cultures as well!
Thank you to Mrs. Havixbeck and Gr. 4/5 students for learning about so many activities, and running such an enjoyable day!
Thank you to those who contributed food from your culture, (families, staff, and students). We all enjoyed sampling a bit of everything! We definitely need to share some recipes!
Thank you to the families and volunteers who were able to come join us for the day. You made the day so special by sharing your talents and spending time with us!
