Halloween Parade and Parties

Friday, Oct. 30 will be our Halloween fun day. This year, you can send your child(ren) dressed in their costumes to school in the morning. Please remember, no weapons are allowed at school (even if it is part of the costume). Send regular clothes to school with your child(ren), just in case they need to change.

We welcome families to join us if you can for our Halloween parade of all our costumes in the Gym at 1:15pm. There will be classroom parties and activities in the afternoon.

Grade 4 and 5 Student Survey

October, 2015

Dear Parents or Guardians:

Re: Province-Wide Implementation of Tell Them From Me
Grades 4-12 Student Survey on Bullying and School Safety

In our continuing efforts to increase school effectiveness, Education and Advanced Learning will continue with the implementation of an online student survey this fall called Tell Them From Me (TTFM). This is a well-known survey tool that gives students the opportunity to express their thoughts on various topics and provides schools and school divisions with information to improve student learning and foster safe and welcoming environments for all students.

TTFM was created by The Learning Bar and is based on the work of Dr. Doug Willms, a researcher who is well known nationally and internationally for his work on the development of educational monitoring systems. Please refer to The Learning Bar’s website at www.thelearningbar.com to obtain more information.

TTFM is an online survey that allows students to provide their input anonymously in terms of school improvement initiatives. Each student receives a randomly generated username and password, so that their identity and responses cannot be linked. All students in grades 4 and 5 will be given the opportunity to participate in the survey, but their participation is not mandatory.

The survey on bullying and school safety has been specifically designed for elementary students and will require approximately 30 minutes to complete. Students will be asked a variety of questions, including the topics of “bullying and school safety”.  The survey will be administered at Stevenson between October 26, 2015 and October 30, 2015.

If you have any questions, please contact Samantha Amaral (Vice Principal) or Jane Couch (Principal) at 204-832-1359.

Thank you for your support in this important initiative.
Sincerely,

Samantha Amaral

Vice Principal

Student Vote

Our Grade 4 and 5 students have been learning about the federal election. Thanks to Mr. Trembath, Mrs. Kaczmarz, and Mrs. Beazley for doing such a thorough job of teaching our students about all the parts of an election and about all the political parties' platforms.

Students were able to make personal decisions about which political party they would each vote for. Today, each Grade 4 and 5 student participated in the #studentvote2015. Ballots will be counted and we will see how close these students' votes are to the real federal election on Monday. We are so proud of our students for how seriously they treated this exercise in learning about democracy.

Everyone remember to go vote. It is your right and your responsibility as a Canadian citizen.

Great Walk To School Day

Thanks to all the families who were able to bring their children to Rod's Football Field for our annual Walk to School Day. Remember, October is Walk To School Month. We encourage everyone to take active and safe routes to school in every season.
We have a new Constable as our School Resource Officer. Thanks for joining us on our walk, Constable Alana!

Report to the Community

Each year, all schools in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division create a Report to the Community which summarizes accomplishments from the previous school year and plans for the current year.  Stevenson School's 2015-2016 Report to the Community is now available for viewing on our website: Stevenson Home Page.

Walk To School Day

October is Walk to School Month. In celebration of this, Stevenson is having its annual Walk to School Day on Thursday, October 8. We will meet at the Rod’s Football field at 8:35am (Silver Ave. and Ferry Rd.). We will walk along the north side of Silver Ave. to the school. If your child is bussed to school, the bus will drop the students off at the field to join in the walk. Staff will be there to supervise students. Families, please feel free to join us in our walk to school. Once we arrive at the school, we will have a brief assembly to start our day together outside. For more information on this event, click here.

Community Management of Head Lice

Head lice commonly occur in young children and as such, at the beginning of the school year, it is good practice to remind parents about detection and management.  The best way to detect and manage head lice is for parents to check their children's heads on a regular basis throughout the year.  The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has prepared information for parents available here and here.  Parents may also contact a public health nurse at 204-940-2040.
