I Love To Read Month

I Love To Read Month

Dear Families,

Here is our calendar of events for the month of February. A paper copy was sent home last week with your child(ren).

In February, Stevenson School and schools all across Manitoba, will be celebrating “I LOVE TO READ” month.  We have special activities planned to highlight the need for strong literacy skills and to demonstrate that reading is fun! Remember to cuddle up and read every night at home too!

FEB 1-ASSEMBLY - We are kicking off I Love to Read month with some fun stories at our 9:00 a.m. assembly. Our Kindergarten classes and some special guests will be singing and performing “Dinosaur Roar” by Paul and Henrietta Strickland.  The Grade 4/5 Orff Club will be reading and playing “Catalina Magdalena Hoopensteiner Wallendiner Hogan Logan Bogan Was Her Name” by Tedd Arnold.  The whole school will be singing a rap about burgers and books.  We will also have a representative from Boston pizza here to present a cheque to our school for all of the home reading we have been doing.  Families are welcome to join us.

FEB 2-WEAR A WORD DAY - Students can wear clothing with words or write a word on paper and tape it on their clothing.

FEB 4- FAMILY READ-IN NIGHTFamilies are invited to come join staff in the library for some reading, snacks, prizes and fun! Perhaps a special guest may show up…

FEB 12-Valentine’s celebrations

FEB 22-24- BOOK SWAP- Beginning on Monday Feb. 22 students are encouraged to bring in gently used books and we will give everyone a chance to trade them for other books on Wed. Feb. 24. The more books you bring the more books you get!

Feb 25- PJ DAY- Students can wear their pajamas and bring a favorite book to school because we are going to snuggle up and read. (Leave teddies and blankets at home.)

Thanks

The Stevenson Literacy Team

Assembly - Tabs for Harley

Join us Monday at 9:00am in the Gym

We are pleased to be hosting the Manitoba Wheelchair Sport Association.
They will be doing a presentation for us and then leaving some wheelchairs for students to try some empathy building activities this week in Gym classes. For more information, go to: MWSA

We will also be launching our Great Kindness Challenge Week! Students will be presenting some skits and giving out the information and challenges for the week.
As a way to combine both the MWSA and our Kindness Challenge, one of our students suggested we collect "Tabs for Harley", for a little boy with cerebral palsy. He needs equipment in order to move around. After you finish canned drinks, take the tabs off. Send them to the school. By trading in lots of these drink tabs, the family can purchase more equipment needed. Discovery Children's Centre collects tabs too. For more information, go to: http://helpingharley.org/
