Phys. Ed. Program Goes to the Circus!
Our Phys. Ed. Teacher, Mr. McKinnon was chosen by our school division to study with the National Circus School!
He has been studying all of the concepts online since January. This week, Mr. McKinnon, as well as the Phys. Ed. Teacher from Ecole Robert Browning - Mr. Vermeylen, and our school division's Phys. Ed./Health Coordinator - Mr. Ross, are in Montreal to study all of the practical skills necessary to implement some circus techniques into a Phys. Ed. program. Research has shown that using these 'circus skills' in a Phys. Ed. program more effectively improves students' overall fitness levels than with a regular program. We strongly believe in helping our students to be the healthiest people they can be. So, we are really excited to find out what Mr. McKinnon has learned!
Beliefs
On a recent Inservice Day, our teachers worked together on our literacy and numeracy programs. We are always reflecting on our teaching practices, looking at the latest research in education, and finding the most efficient and effective ways of delivering quality literacy and numeracy instruction to our students.
When we begin discussions around teaching practices, it is always important to look at our beliefs. As a teaching staff, we feel it is important for all of us to have the same beliefs so that the values we are teaching remain the same throughout our students' time at our school. We summarized all of our beliefs into 3 core statements. From these beliefs, we have made detailed teaching plans in order to help all learners achieve in reading, writing and math. It is our hope that you share the same beliefs and will celebrate all of your child(ren)'s accomplishments at home and at school along with us.

Music Celebration
Last night, our Grade 2 and 3 students performed at the St. James-Assiniboia School Division Music Celebration. Thank you to the families who were able to bring your child(ren) and stay to enjoy the performance. We received some compliments and advice from an adjudicator.
The Choir practiced today at school together. They were already able to make the improvements suggested. Ms. Rempel is very proud of this choir! She says they have a lovely sound together.

Global School Play Day
On
February 3, Stevenson School will be
participating in a “Global School Play Day”. This will be a day for
unstructured, student-initiated play. Students will still come to school for a
regular length of school day. On this day, students may bring items they wish
to play with. This is to be a day to promote active and
imaginative play. You decide what items you are willing to have your child
bring to school such as board games, dolls,
Lego, blocks, trucks, cars, racetracks, playing cards, empty cardboard boxes,
markers, jigsaw puzzles, social games (charades, Pictionary, etc.) The
only restrictions: They must bring toys that do NOT require batteries or
electricity. No devices. Help your child choose a few toys to bring to school
to share. Students
will also be free to use play items provided by the school. Students are
familiar with what kinds of toys, games, and activities we have.
Please
go to the Global School Play Day website for more information: www.globalschoolplayday.com . Research shows that we
learn more deeply when we are playing. Feel free to share this with your
family, friends, and work places. Challenge other adults to try this challenge
too. The more we play, the better we become. We are never too old to play.
You
are welcome to join us for part of the day or the whole day if you can. Please
contact your child’s teacher to find out how you can help. Follow along with us
on Twitter and Instagram that day using #GSPD. Our address is @stevensonelem.
Play
is the Way,
Stevenson
