Little Free Library

Our new Little Free Library was installed today! Feel free to take a book or leave a book.
We would like to give special thanks to the woodworking students at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate for building our new library. Also, this project would not have happened without the vision from our wonderful School Division Coordinators: Mr. McKiel and Ms. McLauchlan. They started this project for all the schools in our school division and are following through with installing them at each school. You can also find out more about Little Free Libraries or learn how to create your own here .

Family Math Night Success

Thank you to all the families who were able to join us for some pasta and math games on Tuesday evening!
We hope everyone had fun and took home a few ideas for playing math games at home. The staff enjoyed watching families engage in games. You are all such talented parents!

Math is about making practical applications to real life and learning strategies for persevering through problem solving. Math is everywhere. Math is something we can all do.
It is our job as adults to make sure our children feel confident in their abilities in Math.

First Assembly

The first few days of classes at Stevenson were fantastic! On Monday, we had a whole school assembly where we discussed all the ways that we work together at Stevenson to make our school a safe and respectful "home away from home" for everyone.  Staff and students all work together in our "school family" to make our school a great place to come every day.

In our classrooms, teachers and students are already working together to make "belief statements" or "class promises" that underline the ways each member of the class team contributes to a positive learning environment.  Relationships are being built and routines are being established.

We are off to a great start with our new school year!

As parents, you can be a partner in your child's education in many ways.  Here are just a few:

* Ask questions.  When we ask our children "What did you do at school today?" we get "nothing" as a reply.  Try some more direct questions, such as:
         - Who did you play with at recess?
         - What did you/your teacher read about in class?
         - Was the morning math problem a brain tickler?
         - Did anything funny happen today?
         - What games did you play in gym/music?
Also, look at your child's classroom blog, Twitter or Instagram feed together with your child. Have them tell you what is going on in the pictures.

* Come out to Parent Council. No need to commit to being at every meeting.  There are lots of "behind the scenes" jobs for parents who can contribute time - whether that's a little or a lot.  The Annual Establishment Meeting is coming up on Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00pm in the Library.  Come join us! There is free supper and babysitting.

* Stay informed by checking this blog and the classroom blogs often.  Don't forget to sign up for Remind (with your child's classroom)!

* Help your child by reviewing school expectations and routines together at home.  These are all published on this blog; click the Parent/Student Handbook tab.

* Communicate openly.  If there is something on your mind, be in touch with your child's teacher sooner than later.

We are looking forward to our continued partnership with all families.
