Outdoor Recess
We will plan to be outside for recesses, rain or shine.
Students have the opportunity to be outdoors engaged in free play for 60 minutes daily while at school. During extreme weather conditions (extreme cold or lightning, as per division policy), recess will be held indoors. While an indoor recess does provide students with a break from academics, it does not provide the same opportunity for fresh air, open space and exercise as getting outside. Our goal will be to be outdoors for recess whenever possible.
Spring weather in Winnipeg is unpredictable; sun, wind, rain, and even snow! That could mean we need hats and sunscreen one day, then coats, rain boots and even mitts the next! Please take each day's conditions into account when sending your child to school. Being prepared for the weather will help to ensure that he/she will be comfortable during outdoor play periods. Thank you for your support!

City of Winnipeg Reminder
Winnipeg Parking Authority campaign encourages drivers to “Be Aware. Park with Care” around schools, fire lanes and designated spaces
Campaign aims to educate drivers prior to WPA mailing out tickets for parking violations
Winnipeg, MB – Today, the Winnipeg Parking Authority (WPA) launched its “Be Aware. Park with Care” campaign which encourages drivers to follow parking laws when stopping or parking around schools, fire lanes and designated parking spaces. The campaign aims to educate drivers about the parking rules in these high-offense areas prior to the WPA beginning to mail out parking tickets on May 1, 2017.
“Parking illegally around schools, in fire lanes and in designated parking spaces can cause serious safety concerns, traffic delays and inconvenience,” said Councillor Cindy Gilroy, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Innovation. “I’m pleased to see the Winnipeg Parking Authority take the initiative to educate the public and emphasize that these spaces are saved for something more important than your convenience.”
The campaign features several videos that will be used to supplement a social media campaign, radio spots, newspaper advertising as well as targeted communication with schools and parents.
“Illegally parked vehicles during school pick up and drop offs create serious safety hazards for children and cause traffic delays,” said Councillor Brian Mayes, the City’s Liaison for School Boards & Youth Opportunity. “I am thrilled the Winnipeg Parking Authority is launching this campaign and working with schools to address these concerns.”
Similarly, the campaign notes that illegally parked cars in fire lanes, whether at a shopping mall, grocery store, community centre or other public venue, can also cause safety issues.
“It’s vital that fire lanes remain free and clear of any parked cars so that we can respond quickly to emergency situations,” said Assistant Chief Mark Reshaur, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “Whether it’s a fire or a medical emergency, seconds count so please pay attention to signage and do not park in fire lanes.”
Also highlighted in the campaign are designated parking spaces which are reserved for persons with a physical disability and a properly displayed current permit.

Practice for Emergencies
Throughout the year, we practice for different emergencies.
Today, we had a practice lockdown.
We practiced a scenario where we are outdoors and needed to leave the school.
Our emergency shelters are Bord-Aire Community Centre and Discovery Children's Centre.
Today, we met at Bord-Aire. Everyone listened very well to the adults in charge. We were impressed with how our students reacted. In a real emergency, everyone needs to think and act quickly.
Our goal is to keep everyone (students and staff) as safe as possible while they are at school.
If parents are visiting the school, we ask you to check in at the office for your safety and for our students' safety. If you enter the building and sense there is something wrong, (office closed, no noises, etc.), we ask that you think and act quickly and keep yourselves safe too. Leave the building. Call the school. If you get no response, call for help.
In the case of a real emergency, we will contact families to inform you about what happened.
If you have any questions about our emergency procedures, please feel free to contact the school at: 204-832-1359 or by email: stevenson@sjsd.net

Community Health
Remember you are the best defence against spreading illnesses and bugs.
Please remind your children to wash their hands before they eat and after they go to the washroom.
We encourage students to wash their hands at school.
Also, to help prevent the spread of lice and bed bugs, check your children daily for signs of bugs.
If your child is itching his/her head, check for live lice or eggs. If your child has lice, spend the time picking the nits out of their hair. You need to check their hair every day.
If your child has red spots on his/her skin, check your house for signs of bed bugs.
It is good practice to check your children every day for changes. If you need help with anything, please feel free to call the school or call our local Health Nurse, Lori-Ann Laramee at: 204-232-7606
