Global School Play Day is coming!

On February 1, Stevenson School will be participating in our second annual “Global School Play Day”. This will be a day for unstructured, student-initiated play. Students will still come to school for a regular length of school day. On this day, students may bring items they wish to play with. This is to be a day to promote active and imaginative play. You decide what items you are willing to have your child bring to school such as board games, dolls, Lego, blocks, trucks, cars, racetracks, playing cards, empty cardboard boxes, markers, jigsaw puzzles, social games (charades, Pictionary, etc.) The only restrictions: They must bring toys that do NOT require batteries or electricity. No devices. Help your child choose a few toys to bring to school to share. Students will also be free to use play items provided by the school. Students are familiar with what kinds of toys, games, and activities we have.
Please go to the Global School Play Day website for more information: www.globalschoolplayday.com . Research shows that we learn more deeply when we are playing. Feel free to share this with your family, friends, and work places. Challenge other adults to try this challenge too. The more we play, the better we become. We are never too old to play.
You are welcome to join us for part of the day or the whole day if you can. Please contact your child’s teacher to find out how you can help. Follow along with us on our blogs, Twitter and Instagram that day using #GSPD. Our address is @stevensonelem.

Crime Prevention Tip

Improvements  to the Citizen Online Police Reporting System

In October 2012, the Winnipeg Police Service launched the Citizen Online Police Reporting System, an online reporting system that allows citizens to electronically report non-violent incidents where there are no suspects.  This initiative was part of the Service’s Strategic Plan to improve public access to police processes through technological and electronic enhancements and has proven to a be popular reporting option.

The Citizen Online Police Reporting System eases the amount of time victims of crime spend reporting incidents.  The system also provides the Service with better data for crime analysis and deployment of resources and enables better management of call volumes through the Service’s Communications Centre.

In 2016, in an effort to continuously improve the service provided to the citizens and businesses of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Police Service announced a number of ongoing improvements to the Citizen Online Police Reporting System;

In July 2016, we announced the improvement where citizens and business community partners could report incidents online and take any physical or video evidence to the closest police service centre.

In September 2016, we expanded the system to allow for the reporting of break and enter to outbuildings, specifically detached garages or sheds.

Now in January 2017, we announced the latest improvement where citizens can make reports involving non-urgent traffic or manner of driving complaints.  Some examples of these types of complaints may include stop sign or red light infractions, excessive speed, aggressive or careless driving, speeding in school zones or passing a stopped school bus with its lights flashing.

Incidents involving impaired drivers, motor vehicle collisions or events involving immediate concern for public safety cannot be reported online. We ask citizens to call 911 or non-emergency in these cases.

Citizens can now report the following incident types using our Citizen Online Police Reporting System:
  • Break & Enter into Outbuildings, detached garages/sheds
  • Damage to Property
  • Damage to a Vehicle
  • Lost Property
  • Theft - including Shoplifting & Gas Drive Offs
  • Theft from a Vehicle
  • Traffic Complaint
Online reporting does not replace traditional reporting. It is simply an enhancement providing an alternative for citizens and businesses.

Please go to www.winnipeg.ca/police for more information on the Citizen Online Police Reporting System.

We hope everyone had a restful and fun winter break.
Just a reminder that there is Early Dismissal on Tuesday, January 10.

St. James-Assiniboia Library

All of the snow we have makes playing outside so much fun, but sometimes you do need to warm up and have some fun indoors. With that in mind, we’re having a great program at the St. James Library on Saturday January 21st – the Family Literacy Fun Day. It’s a drop-in program from 2 – 4 p.m. with lots of entertaining stations featuring a variety of crafts, games and puzzles, all designed to enhance literacy learning.  If you visit all of the stations your name will be entered into a draw to win a book prize!
As always, this program is free to attend, and all necessary materials are supplied by the library. I’ve attached a poster to this email for you to print out, and if you would share the information with the students and their families I’d really appreciate it.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Cheers!
