New Garden

We have started gardening on our playground!

We have always believed in planting trees and plants around our school in order to provide shade, as well as interesting places to investigate, for our students and homes for birds, butterflies and insects. Now, we are beginning to try gardening with our students. We have just built several garden boxes and planted some vegetables. It is our hope to be able to harvest some vegetables to share with our students.

We need your help! Since there are no students or staff at school to take care of our garden boxes during the summer, we are asking families to volunteer to sign up to help us take care of our gardens over the summer. We would ask you to sign up for a week to check on the garden boxes to see if they need watering or weeding. If there are vegetables ready to be picked, please help yourselves to the fresh produce.

Next year, we hope to expand our garden project so that families can come help themselves to more fresh produce to enjoy. We will also share what we grow with our students at school for lunches or snacks. We wish to teach students about the benefits of growing your own food.

Please see below for the summer weeks and call the school to sign up for a week.
When you come to the school, one of our Caretakers will gladly help you get access to watering cans or a hose, or weeding tools as needed.

Thank you to Mrs. Buchanan's class and Mrs. Lowe's class for planning, building, hauling, planting and tending to our gardens!

Thanks also to Windsor Plywood for donating wood and screws, to Reimer Soils for donating soil, to Mr. Rogers (Woods Teacher at SJCI) for cutting our lumber, and to Mr. Johnston for picking everything up and helping to organize and build the boxes. Hopefully this week, you will see the garden box area get spruced up! We are landscaping the area to prepare for more garden boxes. Thank you to Parent Council for funding this project!

We are looking for any donations of lattice for vines to grow on, or any items to help us expand our garden. Please let us know if you can help.

Families, thank you for your help this summer!
