WALKING SCHOOL BUS

Stevenson’s 7th Annual Walking School Bus
June 1 – June 11, 2015

This year, the Walking School Bus is continuing to run for 2 weeks!

Stevenson staff once again wish to promote taking active routes to school such as walking or biking. We can all benefit from having healthier lifestyles and taking care of our environment. We are offering a walking school bus every morning for the next 2 weeks. The regular school bus will still be running. Your regular pick up and drop off sites and times will remain the same for both weeks if you prefer.

As an alternative to riding the bus, we are offering to walk with your child to school every morning for the next 2 weeks. Please walk your child to one of the meeting places. We will pick up your child along our routes. You are most welcome to join us. Here are meeting times and places. Pick the one that suits you the best:

Route 1: East end travelling west -
SE corner of Queen and Ness - 8:20am
From here, we will walk West bound along Ness, picking up students at each of the following streets: King Edward, Brooklyn, and Berry.
SW corner of Berry and Ness - 8:25am

Route 2: West end travelling east -
SE corner of Ferry and Ness   - 8:15am
From here, we will walk East bound along Ness, picking up students at each of the following streets: Collegiate, Roseberry, Parkview, Marjorie, and Hampton.
SW corner of Berry and Ness - 8:25am

Both routes will combine at the SW corner of Berry and Ness and walk North bound on Berry to Silver. The regular crossing guards will be at their corners to help us cross Ness and Silver safely. Both routes will be supervised by Stevenson staff. Please feel free to join us on the walk to school. We will plan to arrive at school at 8:35am.

You do not need to sign up your child for the walking school bus. If you know that you can accompany us as an extra adult supervisor, please join us on the dates you are available. Please remember that the Walking School Bus is for mornings only. You do not need to call the transportation office to let them know your child is not on the bus. Your bus driver is aware of our Walking School Bus.

Thank you for your time,

School Board Presentation

On Tuesday, May 26, the following students made a presentation to our School Division Board of Trustees:
Brooke G., Joshua S., Andrei, Trinity, Fritzy, & Patrick
Brooke and Josh spoke very well about all of the leadership activities our Gr. 4/5 students do at our school, as well as our dedication to teaching students new & innovative things.
Andrei, Trinity, Fritzy, and Patrick performed a dance on behalf of the  "Tapping Our Potential" group. We don't think there has ever been tap dancing at the Board Office before!

Thank you to these students' families for taking the time to join us for this evening presentation.
We are very proud of these students!

Gr. 4/5 Entrepreneurs

We are very proud of all of our Grade 4/5 students and teachers for their hard work this year in raising money for Doctors Without Borders.
They created 2 companies, "Fired Up With Fun" and "Legendary Flavours" through the Entrepreneurial Adventures Program with The Learning Partnership Canada.
Today, the Gr. 4/5 Board of Directors for the companies presented all of our accomplishments at the final Showcase event.
Congratulations on a job well done!

TAPPING OUR POTENTIAL

This year, Mrs. Kaczmarz has been teaching her Grade 4/5 students tap dancing as part of her arts programming. These students have learned a lot this year from this experience in terms of physical, emotional, and social well-being. Students have gained skills in the areas of perseverance, confidence, team work, and in all areas of the provincial curriculum.

They recently performed at our Celebration of the Arts and premiered the music video they have been working on this year. We are so proud of this classroom for taking on this adventure in education!
Here is their video:

SHY or ANXIOUS?

Coaching for Confidence
Internet-based program to help parents help children with difficulty with anxiety (excessive fearfulness, worry, or shyness).
Is your 4 to 12 year old child more shy or fearful than other children of the same age?
Shyness and anxiety are normal emotions.  Some children, however, are much more shy or fearful than the average child.  Anxiety may interfere with their enjoyment of school, activities with other children, new experiences (swimming lessons or sports), and their development of independence and confidence.  Shyness and anxiety may also slow learning at school.
If you think that your child is more anxious (fearful, worried or shy) than most other children of the same age, you may be interested in Coaching for Confidence a web-based program developed for parents of children with anxiety by researchers at the University of Manitoba.
If you are interested in learning more about this evaluation study please contact Julie-Anne at email: CoachingForConfidence@umanitoba.ca  or telephone 204-237-2055 and leave a message.

PARKING LOT

We ask that families please continue to use the side streets to park in order to pick up and drop off your children from school. Please do not use the staff parking lot. It is very dangerous for the students to be walking through the parking lot. Also, we are concerned about damage to vehicles since it is such a small lot.
Recently, a staff member's vehicle was damaged by a parent's vehicle. This could be avoided by families not using the parking lot.

Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any concerns about this, please feel free to call the school.

COMPOST IS READY

Did you know we compost every day at Stevenson?
We have an outdoor, two-bin system where raw fruit and vegetable scraps from our lunch program are taken every day. Thanks to Mr. Doty who manages this daily!

We have been composting successfully for 5 years now.
There is some good compost ready for the taking. Just call the school to come get some for your garden.

MUSIC MONDAY CELEBRATION

Launched in 2005 by The Coalition for Music Education, Music Monday is the world’s largest single event dedicated to raising awareness for music education. Each year, hundreds of thousands of students, educators, and music makers participate in a simultaneous nationwide concert performance of an original song written by a Canadian artist.  www.musicmonday.ca /  www.musicmakesus.ca

Here is our Music Monday performance:
(We performed for families who could make it on Friday before school.)
We will be performing again at our Celebration of the Arts evening on May 20.
