Welcome To Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) programming provides a wonderful opportunity for families to engage with their new school and celebrate active play based learning that is the foundation for children’s healthy, optimal growth and development.
That initial WTK family and school engagement starts a relationship that needs to be nurtured in supporting children throughout their school experience. Dr. Michelann Parr, from Nipissing University’s Schulich School of Education, shares anecdotes, experiences, and practices related to family and school engagement in her most informative blog: “engaging families, engaging schools”.
Talk Read Sing Play every day!

Our annual Welcome To Kindergarten evening is this Wednesday, May 31 from 6:00pm - 7:15pm.
It is a very fun event for our new Kindergarten students who are coming to our school next year.
If you know of any children in the community who were born in 2012, please tell the family about our event.

You Are Invited...

A note was sent home several weeks ago about our new class configurations for next year.
We are hosting a meeting at the school to give you more information and answer any questions you may have about next year.
The meeting is on May 30 at 7:00pm at the school.

Ramadan Begins

We wish all of our families well who are celebrating Ramadan for the next month.

May 30 Meeting at the School

Dear Stevenson Parents,

We will be making a few changes in our classrooms for next year. We want to make you aware of those changes and invite you to an information meeting at the school on Tuesday, May 30 at 7:00pm for an opportunity to find out more about the changes and ask questions.

Over the years, our school continues to grow, as we have more houses being built and more families moving into the area. As a result, each year we need make changes to our classrooms depending on the number of students at each grade level. We want to create a more consistent school model so that students will remain with the same teacher for several years and teachers will teach the same grade levels more consistently.

We will have 4 – Grade 1/2 classrooms and 6 – Grade 3/4/5 classrooms going forward. There are many benefits to having combined grades or multi-age classrooms:

  • Students stay with the same teacher for several years, which results in a stronger relationship.
  • Students’ anxieties are reduced, and they are more confident and comfortable as they know the classroom expectations and routines for several years.
  • Students are more willing to take risks in their learning.
  • Teachers know their students better over the years, resulting in programming better for student achievement.
  • Increased teaching time.
  • Students have greater opportunities to be exposed to more concepts, skills, and big ideas resulting in better learning.
  • Students challenging themselves more, resulting in accelerated learning.
  • Parents, students and teachers have a better opportunity to build relationships, resulting in better communication and connections between home and school.
  • Teachers have a bigger team to plan with and to share in each other’s strengths.
  • Students have more opportunities for peer leadership and role modeling.

This model of having combined and multi-age classrooms lends itself well to current research in education that states:

  • “Knowing the children we teach – individually, culturally, and developmentally – is as important as knowing the content we teach. Knowing the families of the children we teach and inviting their participation is essential to children’s education. How adults at school work together is as important as individual competence: lasting change begins with the adult community.” (Katz, 2012).
  • In education, “what truly matters is teachers’ expertise. How can we get collective impact? How can we resource our schools to value the expertise that they have; to increase the expertise they have?” (Hattie, 2017).

Please find listed below the classrooms for the 2017-18 school year:

Outdoor Learning

Dear Stevenson Families:

Stevenson School will once again be participating in an Outdoor Education Challenge! Each classroom will be learning outdoors for different periods of time from May 23 – June 29, rain or shine! Some classrooms have already been taking their learning outside and building stamina for staying out longer and for going on community walks. Students will be designing and constructing shelters for the playground to take a break from the sun, wind and/or rain. We also will have several tents and our school tipi as sheltered learning spaces. Students will even be eating lunch outdoors in June.  In the event of extreme heat/humidity or severe rain we will take a break and head indoors.
We are asking for your support to make this an enjoyable experience. Students should dress for the weather and will need some supplies to ensure their comfort and safety each day.
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Rubber boots and a rain coat or poncho
  • Umbrella (optional)
  • Sweater or jacket for cool mornings
  • Water bottle
  • Backpack
  • Sunglasses
  • A change of clothes

*All items should be labeled with your child’s name and room number please.

Our plan is to engage students in a variety of literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, art, and play activities that stimulate their interest in and their appreciation of the outdoors.

While outdoors in nature, a child is more likely to “encounter opportunities for decision making that stimulate problem solving and creative thinking because outdoor spaces are often more varied and less structured than indoor spaces,” and “induce curiosity and the use of imagination” (Burdette & Whitaker, 2005, p. 48).

Part of our outdoor learning will involve exploring our community.  In September, you signed a permission slip to allow your child to participate in community walks for the remainder of the school year.  If your wishes have changed since then, please contact your child’s teacher directly.

Another way you can support our outdoor learning adventures is to volunteer with your child’s classroom. Please let your child(ren)’s teacher(s) know if you are available to join them.

We are looking for some donations of items that would help in our learning outdoors. If you have any of the following items or you think of something else creative we could use, please contact the school:
  • Scoops, shovels, cups, wooden spoons
  • Pots, pans, muffin tins, pails
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Pieces of wood, logs, pegboard, pressboard, cardboard
  • Small toys and loose parts (cars, dolls, shells…)
  • Tires
Also, we are looking to borrow the following items:
  • Wagons
  • Wheelbarrows
  • Adult sized shovels
  • Binoculars
We are excited to share this adventure with our students and look forward to the learning opportunities we will have together. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher at school.

Yours in learning,

Stevenson Staff

Visit Your Local Public Library

The weather is finally getting warmer, which means that it’s almost time for summer and the TD-SRC Summer Reading Club at the Winnipeg Public Library.

The TD-SRC is a great way for kids to have fun and keep reading all summer. Studies have shown that children who continue to read during the summer reduce summer reading loss, and may improve their reading skills. It’s FREE to join at any branch, and everyone who joins will receive a bilingual reading kit to get them started. In addition, there are special programs happening at all of the public libraries in Winnipeg, as well as Library Day at the Ballpark on August 13. Registration begins on Saturday June 17th and the program continues throughout the summer until Friday August 18th.
