Outdoor Classrooms

Stevenson School will be participating in an Outdoor Education Challenge! Each classroom will be learning outdoors for different periods of time from May 30 – June 29, rain or shine! Students will be designing and constructing shelters to take a break from the sun, wind and/or rain.  Students will even be eating lunch outdoors.

We are asking for your support to make this an enjoyable experience. Students should dress for the weather and will need some supplies to ensure their comfort and safety each day.

  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Rubber boots and a rain coat or poncho
  • Umbrella (optional)
  • Sweater or jacket for cool mornings
  • Water bottle
  • Backpack
  • Sunglasses
  • A change of clothes

*All items should be labeled with your child’s name and room number please. **In the case of severe weather we will return indoors.

Our plan is to engage students in a variety of literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, art, and play activities that stimulate their interest in and their appreciation of the outdoors.

While outdoors in nature, a child is more likely to “encounter opportunities for decision making that stimulate problem solving and creative thinking because outdoor spaces are often more varied and less structured than indoor spaces,” and “induce curiosity and the use of imagination” (Burdette & Whitaker, 2005, p. 48).

Another way you can support our outdoor learning adventures is to volunteer with your child’s classroom. Please let your child(ren)’s teacher(s) know if you are available to join them.

We are looking for some donations of items that would help in our learning outdoors. If you have any of the following items or you think of something else creative we could use, please send these items to school: (please see other side of paper)

  • Scoops, shovels, cups, wooden spoons
  • Pots, pans, muffin tins, pails
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Pieces of wood, logs, pegboard, pressboard, cardboard
  • Small toys and loose parts (cars, dolls, shells…)
  • Tires

Also, we are looking to borrow the following items:

  • Wagons
  • Wheelbarrows
  • Adult sized shovels
  • Binoculars

We are excited to share this adventure with our students and look forward to the learning opportunities we will have together. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher at school.

Yours in learning,

Stevenson Staff

*Three Winnipeg school boards will be holding by-elections on June 11. The nomination period begins Saturday, April 30 and ends Friday, May 6. Click here for the official City of Winnipeg site for election information.

*School board elections are a great opportunity for Manitobans to get involved in public education - by voting or running as a candidate for school trustee. To learn more about role of school boards and school trustees, check out the Guide to School Boards and Trusteeship.
*The Role of School Boards
School boards are elected by the voters of a school division or district to provide for the educational needs of the community's school-aged children. By provincial law, there are certain things that every school board must do, and certain services they must provide. However, there are also things that school boards may do. School boards work with their communities to ensure that local schools offer the specific programs and services that meet community needs. School trustees are the community members elected to serve on school boards. They come from all walks of life, but share a common desire to serve youth and their communities.

To learn more about the role of the school board and school board trustee please watch this short video by the Manitoba School Boards Association.

The St. James-Assiniboia School Division has a 2016 operating budget of $105,912,508.

It is important that our community makes an informed decision and gets out to vote for the candidates for school trustee in the King Edward/Deer Lodge Ward.

Information about the candidates running in the Kind Edward/Deer Lodge Ward can be found by clicking this link

Music Monday Assembly

We had a great assembly today in the Gym! Thank you to the families who were able to join us.

We were given $2,500 from Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds for a grant we applied for in order to plant trees on our playground.

We also opened up a few of the instruments we received through a Canada wide grant called MusiCounts BandAid Program. We feel very fortunate to have been granted $10,000 worth of new instruments for our Music program. We will re-use our old instruments in our outdoor learning.

Our K & 1 students performed a spring song they have been working on and our Gr. 2-5 students performed one song from the upcoming musical, "Annie Kids".

Mr. McKinnon handed out Speed Stacking awards to our school team of cup stackers. The team performed for us with great speed! They are way faster than us adults for sure!
