MusiCounts Canada Celebration

We have some VERY exciting news!  On Monday, June 13, Mrs. Chapman's Grade 2/3 class and a few older students have been selected to join in the MusiCounts Band Aid Celebration at Stevenson in the music room.  Our school is the recipient of a $10,000 music grant from MusiCounts Band Aid program and we have purchased many new instruments for the music room.  The Aboriginal People's Television Network will be filming us and this celebration will be aired on their TV station as well as showcased at the Forks on June 25 for the Aboriginal Day Live.  In addition, we will be meeting and greeting a very special guest, Don Amero.  He has been nominated for Canada's most prestigious music awards including Junos (top Canadian music award), toured coast‐to‐coast, appeared on national television, presented at festivals, performed with the symphony, and showcased in New York City.  The students are preparing a little song to play for our guests.  In addition, a few students have been chosen to do one-on-one interviews talking about what music means to us at Stevenson and how we feel about our new instruments.  We look forward to sharing our experience with you.

We would also like to thank the parents, grandparents, and guardians who volunteered their time last night to help run the BBQ. We couldn't do it without you! FREE Summer Camp

WASAC (Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre) is sponsoring a FREE summer camp:

Local Hockey Program Opportunity

 The St. James Minor Hockey Association, in an effort to recruit new players and increase the number of children playing hockey has applied for and been selected for THE FIRST SHIFT program.  

　

THE FIRST SHIFT is a very elaborate and well designed program that was created through a joint effort between Bauer and Hockey Canada.  The highlights of the program are:

Open to players between 6 and 10 years old

Players must never have registered for hockey in the past

On line registration begins June 10th and the website is http://www.thefirstshift.ca/program-locator/ and there is also other information available here

Registration is on a first come, first served basis to a maximum of 45 players

We will host the Welcome Event, where representatives will come to our association (at a location TBA) on October 13th, 2016

Parents only pay $199 and their child gets ALL equipment - From Bauer, PLUS

6 x 1 hour ice time sessions with trained on ice coaches at a ratio of 1:4

Walking School Bus

Stevenson’s 8th Annual Walking School Bus

June 6 – June 16, 2016

This year, the Walking School Bus is continuing to run for 2 weeks!

Stevenson staff once again wish to promote taking active routes to school such as walking or biking. We can all benefit from having healthier lifestyles and taking care of our environment. We are offering a walking school bus every morning for the next 2 weeks. The regular school bus will still be running. Your regular pick up and drop off sites and times will remain the same for both weeks if you prefer. 

As an alternative to riding the bus, we are offering to walk with your child to school every morning for the next 2 weeks. Please walk your child to one of the meeting places. We will pick up your child along our routes. You are most welcome to join us. Here are meeting times and places. Pick the one that suits you the best:

Route 1: East end travelling west - 

SE corner of Queen and Ness - 8:20am          

From here, we will walk West bound along Ness, picking up students at each of the following streets: King Edward, Brooklyn, and Berry. 

SW corner of Berry and Ness - 8:25am

Route 2: West end travelling east - 

SE corner of Ferry and Ness   - 8:15am

From here, we will walk East bound along Ness, picking up students at each of the following streets: Collegiate, Roseberry, Parkview, Marjorie, and Hampton.

SW corner of Berry and Ness - 8:25am

Both routes will combine at the SW corner of Berry and Ness and walk North bound on Berry to Silver. The regular crossing guards will be at their corners to help us cross Ness and Silver safely. Both routes will be supervised by Stevenson staff. Please feel free to join us on the walk to school. We will plan to arrive at school at 8:35am.

You do not need to sign up your child for the walking school bus. If you know that you can accompany us as an extra adult supervisor, please join us on the dates you are available. Please remember that the Walking School Bus is for mornings only. You do not need to call the transportation office to let them know your child is not on the bus. Your bus driver is aware of our Walking School Bus.

Outdoor School

We are enjoying our outdoor school so far this month! We wish to immerse our students in nature, in order to help them connect better with the environment, as well as to respect and learn how to take care of our community. We are also making connections to nature with our provincial curriculum. 

A letter was sent home a few weeks ago to remind you to send your child(ren) to school with appropriate clothing for the weather. 

Mrs. Lowe and Mrs. Buchanan's classes have taken on the outdoor challenge. Other classrooms will join in throughout this month.
